2022 FIFA World Cup winner Lionel Messi was ready to quit his boyhood club Barcelona in 2020 after spending over twenty years at Camp Nou.

A host of clubs, including Manchester City, were interested in acquiring the services of one of the greatest players of all time.

However, Lionel Messi’s anticipated move to Manchester City didn’t materialize, as he eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the French League.

Reports from Argentine news outlet El Chiringuito (via Sport Witness) indicated that Messi was initially inclined towards joining the Cityzens due to his close relationship with Sergio Aguero, his friend, and former boss Pep Guardiola.

Messi sought assurance that Aguero would remain at Manchester City before finalizing his decision to move. However, Aguero ultimately opted to join Barcelona instead of staying with City.

Despite Aguero’s departure, Guardiola remained at Manchester City and achieved remarkable success, including winning a historic treble with the team, which included their first-ever Champions League trophy.

On the other hand, Messi’s move to PSG didn’t yield as much success on the field, although he secured the French Ligue 1 title. Nonetheless, he achieved a significant milestone by winning the FIFA World Cup, a trophy that had eluded him for years, marking a pivotal moment in his illustrious career.
